22) Bodhi trees in Thailand

The bodhi tree was a large and ancient sacred fig tree. The spiritual teacher Siddhartha Gautama has attained enlightenment under this tree, and became known as the Buddha. The bodhi tree can be recognized by its heart-shaped leaves, which are usually prominently displayed. In Thailand you will find the trees anywhere near temples, but sometimes also just at an unexpected place. Often the trees have support sticks to support the branches and to support Buddhism. In temples you also find the heart-shaped leaves as a bell-clapper in the many bells that tinkle in the wind. Read more about this tree here.
